Why Are Third-Party Cookies Going Away?

The clock has run out. Safari and Firefox blocked third-party cookies years ago. Google Chrome — which holds roughly 65% of the browser market — has been on a multi-year journey to deprecate them entirely. Apple’s Intelligent Tracking Prevention continues to tighten. Privacy regulations like GDPR and CCPA have made consent-based tracking a compliance minefield.

For most of the internet, this is a privacy win. For affiliate marketing, it is an existential threat.

The entire affiliate model depends on reliably connecting a user’s click on an affiliate link to a later purchase. Cookies were the glue. Without them, that connection breaks — and so does attribution, commission tracking, and payment accuracy.

The industry has known this was coming. The question was always: what replaces cookies?

How Bad Is the Problem for Affiliate Marketing?

The numbers tell the story. Affiliate marketing drives an estimated 16% of all e-commerce sales in the United States. The global market is valued at over $27 billion and growing. Every major brand runs affiliate programs, from Amazon to Shopify merchants to SaaS companies.

Is Server-Side Tracking the Answer?

The affiliate industry’s most common response to cookie deprecation is server-side (S2S) tracking, also called postback tracking or server-to-server tracking. Instead of relying on a browser cookie, the merchant’s server directly notifies the affiliate network’s server when a conversion occurs.

S2S tracking is better than cookies in some ways. It isn’t affected by browser privacy settings or ad blockers. It doesn’t expire the way cookies do.

But it introduces a different set of problems:

  • Implementation complexity. S2S tracking requires deep integration with the merchant’s backend systems. Every merchant has to implement it individually, and the technical lift is significant.
  • Click ID dependency. S2S still requires passing a click identifier through the conversion funnel. If the click ID is lost (page refreshes, redirect chains, single-page app navigation), attribution fails.
  • Single point of trust. The merchant’s server reports conversions. Affiliates have no independent way to verify that all conversions are being reported accurately.
  • No cross-device solution. S2S tracking ties attribution to a session, not an identity. If a user clicks on mobile and converts on desktop, the attribution is lost — the same problem cookies had.
  • Data silos. Each network implements S2S differently. There is no universal standard, and data remains locked inside proprietary systems.

Server-side tracking is a reasonable incremental improvement. But it is a band-aid on a structural wound. It replaces one fragile identifier (a cookie) with another fragile identifier (a click ID) and still depends on centralized, unverifiable reporting.

What Makes Blockchain-Based Tracking Fundamentally Different?

Blockchain affiliate tracking doesn’t patch the cookie model. It replaces the entire paradigm.

The core insight is simple: a crypto wallet address is a permanent, user-controlled identity that works across every device, every browser, and every platform — without cookies, without click IDs, and without trusting a centralized intermediary.

Here is why wallet-based identity solves the problems that cookies and S2S tracking cannot:

No Expiration

A wallet address is permanent. There is no 30-day window, no session timeout, no cookie expiration. If a user clicks an affiliate link with their wallet connected today and converts six months from now, the attribution is still intact.

No Blocking

Browser extensions, privacy settings, and ad blockers cannot block a wallet address. The identity lives on the blockchain, not in the browser. There is nothing to delete, nothing to block, nothing to clear.

True Cross-Device Attribution

A user’s wallet is the same on their phone, laptop, tablet, and desktop. When attribution is tied to a wallet rather than a browser cookie, cross-device tracking works by default — not as a probabilistic guess, but as a cryptographic certainty.

Independent Verification

On-chain tracking data is public and immutable. Both affiliates and merchants can independently verify every click, every conversion, and every payout by querying the blockchain directly. No black-box reporting. No discrepancies that favor the network.

Fraud Resistance

Every attribution event is a signed transaction on a public ledger. Cookie stuffing is impossible — you cannot “stuff” a wallet signature. Click injection fails because attribution requires a verifiable on-chain interaction, not a passive browser event.

How Does Njord Protocol Implement Cookieless Tracking?

PDA-Based Attribution

When an affiliate joins a campaign, the protocol derives a Program Derived Address (PDA) from the affiliate’s wallet public key and the campaign’s public key. This PDA is deterministic and unique — it serves as the affiliate’s permanent tracking identifier for that campaign. No cookies, no click IDs, no session tokens.

On-Chain Conversion Recording

When a conversion occurs, a transaction is recorded on Solana containing the affiliate’s PDA, the campaign ID, the conversion value, and a timestamp. This transaction is cryptographically signed and permanently stored on the blockchain. It cannot be altered, deleted, or disputed without on-chain evidence.

Automatic Settlement

The smart contract calculates the commission and transfers funds from the campaign escrow to the affiliate’s wallet in a single atomic transaction. Settlement happens in approximately 3 seconds — not 30 to 90 days.

Challenge System
