How On-Chain Affiliate Tracking Works on Solana

TL;DR: On-chain affiliate tracking records every click, conversion, and payout as a Solana transaction. Unlike cookie-based tracking that can be blocked or manipulated, on-chain attribution creates a permanent, verifiable record. Njord Protocol uses Program Derived Addresses (PDAs) to link affiliates to conversions, with automatic commission payouts from smart contract escrow in ~3 seconds.

The affiliate marketing industry is facing an existential tracking crisis. Google has deprecated third-party cookies in Chrome, joining Safari and Firefox which already block them by default. With third-party cookies disappearing, the $27 billion affiliate industry needs a fundamentally new approach to tracking — not just another workaround.

Traditional affiliate marketing relies on browser cookies to track user journeys from affiliate links to conversions. This approach has fatal limitations:

  • Cookie deprecation: Chrome, Safari, and Firefox are all eliminating or restricting third-party cookies
  • Cookie blocking: Privacy-focused browsers and ad blockers delete or block tracking cookies
  • Cross-device gaps: Cookies don’t follow users across phones, tablets, and desktops
  • Attribution windows: Cookies expire (typically 30 days), creating arbitrary cutoffs for commission eligibility
  • Manipulation: Cookie stuffing and other fraud techniques exploit the system
  • Privacy regulations: GDPR and CCPA make cookie consent complex and reduce tracking coverage
  • Opacity: Affiliates can’t independently verify tracking accuracy

Why Server-Side Tracking Isn’t Enough

The industry’s current answer to the cookieless future is server-side (S2S) tracking. While S2S tracking improves cookie recognition by ~12.6%, it’s fundamentally a band-aid: it still relies on identifiers that can be lost, requires trust in the tracking platform, and doesn’t solve cross-device attribution.

On-chain tracking is the permanent solution. Instead of patching a broken cookie system, it replaces it entirely with cryptographic wallet-based identity.

How Solana Enables Better Tracking

Solana’s blockchain provides the foundation for a fundamentally different tracking model:

Transaction Speed

Solana processes transactions in approximately 400 milliseconds with finality in ~3 seconds. This is fast enough for real-time conversion tracking without degrading user experience.

Low Cost

Solana transactions cost fractions of a cent (~$0.00025). Recording affiliate events on-chain is economically viable at scale, unlike Ethereum where gas fees would make per-conversion tracking prohibitively expensive.

Programmability

Solana’s smart contract runtime (called “programs”) supports the complex logic needed for commission calculation, escrow management, and fraud detection.

Njord Protocol’s Tracking Architecture

Step 1: Campaign Setup

When a company creates a campaign, the smart contract creates several on-chain accounts:

  • Campaign Account: Stores campaign parameters (commission rate, budget, targeting)
  • Escrow Account: Holds the campaign budget in USDC or SOL
  • Attribution Registry: Tracks which affiliates are participating

Each affiliate gets a unique tracking identifier derived from their wallet address and the campaign ID. This is implemented as a Program Derived Address (PDA) — a deterministic address computed from the affiliate’s public key and the campaign’s public key. No cookies needed.

Step 3: Conversion Recording

When a conversion occurs, the recording transaction includes:

  • The affiliate’s PDA (proving which affiliate drove the conversion)
  • The campaign ID
  • The conversion value
  • A timestamp
  • Optional metadata (conversion type, product ID, etc.)

This transaction is signed and recorded on Solana’s ledger, creating a permanent, tamper-proof record.

Step 4: Automatic Settlement

The smart contract verifies the conversion data, calculates the commission based on the campaign’s rate, and transfers the commission from the escrow account to the affiliate’s wallet — all in a single atomic transaction.

If there are insufficient escrow funds, the transaction fails cleanly rather than creating an IOU.

Step 5: Challenge Period

After a conversion is recorded, there is a configurable hold period (based on affiliate tier) during which the conversion can be challenged. Higher-tier affiliates with proven track records have shorter hold periods, down to zero for Elite-tier affiliates.

Technical Details for Developers

Njord Protocol’s smart contract is built with the Anchor framework on Solana. Key technical aspects:

  • Commission calculation: Percentage-based with basis point precision (1 bp = 0.01%)
  • Escrow management: Token accounts owned by the program with authority checks

The protocol is open-source, and all on-chain data can be independently verified using Solana explorers or direct RPC calls.


Is On-Chain Tracking the Answer to the Cookieless Future?

The affiliate marketing industry will spend years adapting to a cookieless world through server-side workarounds, first-party data strategies, and Google’s Topics API. These are incremental patches to a fundamentally broken model.

On-chain tracking offers a clean break: wallet-based identity that doesn’t rely on cookies, can’t be blocked by browsers, works across devices, and provides transparent attribution that both advertisers and affiliates can independently verify.

For the affiliate marketing industry, the question isn’t whether blockchain-based tracking will replace cookies. It’s whether your program will adopt it before or after your competitors do.
